MJB Draft Selects More Area Players

More Local high school and college athletes were selected last week in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

St. Francis High graduate Matt Hirsh, who pitches for the California Lutheran University team, was picked by the Houston Astros in the 30th round.

The college junior, who was selected 914th overall, was 6-4 last season with an earned run average of 3.27.

Brandon Higelin, a senior hurler with the California State University, Los Angeles team, was taken by the San Diego Padres in the 28th round. The CV High graduate was the 848th selection overall.

Among the high school selections was St. Francis High senior Andy Marquardt who was chosen by the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was picked in the the 36th round, the 1,096th overall selection.

Trevor Bell, the all star pitcher/player for the Crescenta Valley High boys' varsity baseball team, has been chosen 37th overall by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the Major League Baseball First-Year Draft earlier in the week..
