Hear music from Scotland and Ireland

Craicmore, a group rooted in the music of Scotland and Ireland,

will perform at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Under the Oaks Theater at

Descanso Gardens.

The group features the critically acclaimed vocals of contralto

Nancy Johnston. The program is part of Descanso's summer Sunday Under

the Oaks Concerts, which will continue through July 24.

Each concert is free with Gardens admissions and begins at 2 p.m.

Future concerts will be the Firehouse Stompers Dixieland Jazz Band on

July 3; Brasil Brazil on July 10; Abalaye African Drum Ensemble on

July 17 and Da Group on July 24. Descanso Gardens is at 1418 Descanso

at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Glendale Central Library.

Robert Robinson of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's Speaker's bureau

will speak and show a video about the bowl's history, performance

space and its restored design. Admission is free. For more

City to honor

former mayor

Glendale City flags will be lowered on Monday in honor of former

mayor and City Councilmember Vern Allen. Allen died on June 11. He

was living in Banning, California, at the time of his death.

Allen was appointed to the Glendale City Council in September of

1969 to fill the unexpired term of Kenneth Stephens. He was elected

to office in April 1971, and served as mayor from 1971-1972 and again in 1974.

City flags will be lowered to half-staff on Monday from sunrise to

sunset.
