The volunteer group is charged with recommending one of the four
or five search firms that responded to the college's request for
search proposal, board of trustees President Anita Gabrielian said.
The group will also finalize the job announcement, and when all of
the applications have come in, the advisory group will whittle down
the finalists to a group of three to five people.
"I don't know what to expect," Gabrielian said. "We're hoping,
because Glendale Community College is one of the top community
colleges in California, and California is such desirable place to
work -- we're hoping to get inundated. We're hoping to get at least
40 candidates."
The reality, however, is that the field of people qualified to be
a college superintendent is small, Gabrielian said, so the board is
waiting to see what comes in.
"I just think the reputation of Glendale Community College will be
able to attract top-notch candidates," she said.
The group is made up of members of from each of the college's
stakeholder groups -- faculty, management and classified employees,
students, board members and members of the community. The chair of
the group, Vicki Nicholson, is also the group's equal employment
opportunity representative. Trustees and the chair of the group do
not have voting power.
The next man or woman who comes in will influence the college's
direction into this new century, said Tony Tartaglia, the college's
foundation president and member of the new committee, recalling the
days of when his alma mater Cal State Northridge was searching for
its new president after some 20 years.
"I think its absolutely, extremely important," Tartaglia said. "We
haven't had a new president superintendent for 22 years -- it
couldn't be more important to the college now. There isn't one single
issue that's more important -- this is our rudder that's going to
guide the college."
Advisory committee to begin search process
The group will be charged with finding three to five solid
candidates for the position of Glendale Community College's next
president superintendent.
