Gossard wins in return

September 05, 2005|By:

Former Crescenta Valley High football Coach Dennis Gossard made a

triumphant return as the head coach for the Pasadena City College

football team, guiding the Lancers to a 16-14 win Saturday against

host L.A. Valley College.

Gossard employed a two-quarterback system, using freshman Tremane

Vaughn -- who was originally slated to be a defensive back -- on

option plays and sophomore Carlos Celis on primarily passing

situations.

The Lancers had 299 yards of total offense, including 221 in 41

attempts on the ground. Celis and Vaughn passed for only 78 yards,

but neither threw an interception.

Gossard was the head coach of the Lancer program from 1987-94 and

served as an assistant before being named the head coach in March.

He was the head coach for the Falcons in 1977 and 1978 and

returned in 1995 as an assistant, helping them to five Pacific League

crowns.
