The Glendale Community College Theatre Arts Department is having

auditions for the production of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet"

today in the Mainstage Theatre. All auditions are by cold readings

from the script. "Romeo and Juliet" will open Oct. 27 and run for

three weekends. Rehearsals begin Sept. 12. To enroll in the theater

THURSDAY

Preview performances for the play "Beggars in the House of Plenty"

are at 8 p.m. tonight and Friday at The Victory Theatre Center in

Burbank. The play opens at 8 p.m. Saturday. In its West Coast

premiere, the play is written by John Patrick Shanley. It explores

the myths and realities of an Irish-American family at war with

itself. Anita Khanzadian is the director and its is produced by VS.

Theatre Company and The Victory Theatre Center. The playhouse is at

3326 W. Victory Blvd., Burbank. Tickets are $25 and can be reserved

FRIDAY

Local students will present free performances of the play

"Defending Our Future: Care + Action = A Cleaner Environment," about

oceans, the environment and what kids can do to protect the planet,

at 7 p.m. today at the Pacific Park Community Center Gymnasium, 5001

S. Pacific Ave., Glendale. An additional performance will be at 3:30

p.m. on Sunday at the Glendale Public Library Auditorium, 222 E.

Verdugo Hills Art Assn. meeting, featuring a demonstration by

watercolor artist Lisa Lopuck, will be at 7 p.m. at the Citibank

The Stepping Stone Players opens "The Music Man" by Meredith

Willson at 7 p.m. tonight at the Hoover High School Auditorium, 651

Glenwood Road, Glendale. Performances are at 7 p.m. Fridays and

Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays through Sept. 25. American Sign Language

interpretations will be on Sept. 18 and 25. Tickets are $12, $8 for

Zareh will be showing his paintings and drawings in a second solo

exhibition at the Harvest Gallery. The opening reception is from 7 to
