Tars beat Spartans
* WATER POLO: Newport Harbor High's Brett Auer and Clay Jorth each
had four goals on the road in a 14-9 boys water polo win over Villa
Park Tuesday.
Newport scored eight goals in the second half en route to the
nonleague victory, improving the Sailors to 7-1 overall.
Bryce McLain had 13 saves for the Sailors, while Kyle Sherman
contributed with two goals and Telford Cottam scored one goal and two
assists.
Sailors conquer
* FIELD HOCKEY: The Newport Harbor High girls field hockey team
dominated its first Sea View League game, defeating host Fountain
Valley, 7-0, Tuesday.
Danica Kalmbach, Sasha Grumann and Nicole Newquist each had a pair
of goals, while Amanda Carver added one for the Sailors, who improved
to 13-2 overall.
Eagles triumph
* WATER POLO: The Estancia High boys water polo team earned a 7-2
halftime lead over visiting Orange, and captured a 10-5 Golden West League victory over visiting Orange Tuesday in the league opener at
Newport Harbor.
Estancia improved to 5-1 overall, while Chad Kunert scored five
goals for the Eagles, and Trevor McDonald scored four.
Lightning win laugher
* WATER POLO: The Sage Hill School boys water polo team defeated
La Quinta, 14-4, Tuesday at Corona del Mar High. The Lightning scored
seven times on the man advantage out of 10 attempts.
Leading the way was sophomore James Miller and senior Chris Mazzo
with three goals each. Jordan Cline, Beau Caillouette and Perry Pang
added two goals apiece. Netminder Danny Harold recorded 13 saves for
Sage Hill, which improved to 6-4.
Los Al tops Newport
* VOLLEYBALL: The Newport Harbor girls volleyball team lost to
host Los Alamitos, 20-25, 20-25, 25-22, 15-25, Tuesday. Jamie Heenen
led the way with 15 kills and an ace. Megan Munce added 10 kills and
two aces. Newport Harbor, which fell to 2-5, plays in the Nike
Challenge in Chicago Friday and Saturday.
Wounded Mesa falls
* VOLLEYBALL: The Costa Mesa High girls volleyball team fell to
visiting Canyon, 25-15, 25-19, 25-21, in a nonleague match Tuesday.
