Sailors top Warriors in league opener

Senior Bryana Carey posted a match-high 14 kills to lead the Newport

Harbor High girls volleyball team past visiting Woodbridge, 22-25,

25-22, 25-15, 22-25, 15-12, Monday in both teams' Sea View League

opener.

Carey also tallied four aces and four blocks as the Sailors

improved to 7-6, 1-0 in league.

Sophomore Megan Munce totaled 13 kills, while sophomore Jamie

Heenan had 11 kills and sophomore Cassidy Gayner added eight kills.

Woodbridge fell to 0-1 in league.

Newport Harbor plays host to Foothill at 4 p.m. Wednesday in

another league contest.

Sailors trounce Cougars

* TENNIS: The Newport Harbor High girls tennis team warmed up for

today's Sea View League opener against visiting Woodbridge with a

16-2 nonleague win over visiting Capistrano Valley Monday.

Senior Jill Casserly did not lose a game in sweeping at No. 2

singles for the Sailors, while senior Brittany Sturgess won 18 of 20

games at No. 3 singles for the Tars (6-1).

Capo Valley fell to 3-9.

Sea Kings top Beckman

* GOLF: The Corona del Mar High girls golf team defeated host

Beckman, 241-267, in Pacific Coast League play Monday at Tustin Ranch

Golf Club.

Seniors Katie McKitterick and Michelle Drucker both carded 46 to

lead the Sea Kings (6-1, 4-1 in league), while sophomore Jessica

Milner and junior Courtney Wright both tallied 49. Junior Jonna Kim

rounded out CdM's scoring with 51.

CdM, currently second in league behind undefeated (in league)

Northwood, faces Aliso Niguel at 2:30 p.m. today at Newport Beach

Country Club before a key matchup with the Timberwolves Thursday.
