Tars trounce Woodbridge

Newport Harbor High's boys water polo team won their Sea View League

opener at home Wednesday, 16-4, over Woodbridge. Bryce McLain made 15

saves in goal to halt the Warriors. Brett Auer led all scorers with

four goals.

The Sailors (10-1, 1-0 in league) will play this weekend in the

South Coast tournament at La Quinta High School.

Estancia spikes Lions

* VOLLEYBALL: Estancia High's girls volleyball team beat

Westminster in a Golden West League home match Wednesday, 25-9, 25-8,

25-20. Sarah Braunsdorf led the Eagles with 11 kills. Tracy Patton

contributed six digs and four service aces.

Estancia (9-4, 3-1 in league) will play host to league foe

Saddleback Friday night.

Sailors surf to win

* SURFING: The Newport Harbor High surf team opened the season

with some high and low points. With waist- to chest-high surf and

occasional head-high waves, the Sailors won four of the five events

and the overall competition, 92-74, against Laguna Beach.

Leading the boys long board division in a sweep was veteran Chase

Smith with 32 total points. Placing second and third were Rob Delorme

and Christopher LoMenzo.

The body board team also rang up a sweep. Leading the team to a

15-5 victory was Matt Kretschmar with a meet high of 32.5 points and

a high wave score of 7. Placing second and third were Johnny Savoji

and Robert Murow.

The girl's short board team pulled out a close victory, 11-9. They

were led by newcomer Camile Collett's first-place finish. The girl's

long board team won 11-10. They were led by first-place finisher

Taylor Simpkins.

Leading the short board teams to heat wins were Reagan Riley with

a first-place finish in heat one and Christian Morabito's first-place

finish in heat two.

The South Coast League competition continues Oct. 11 against Dana

Hills at Salt Creek at 6:30 a.m.

Eagles claim third

* GOLF: Estancia High's girls golf team finished third Wednesday

at the Serrano tournament at Spring Valley Lake Country Club in Apple

Valley. The Eagles shot a 371, 14 shots behind tournament winner

Redlands East Valley. Bridgett Gleason and Carolyn Clemons tied for

the team lead, shooting 87.

Estancia will face Westminster in a Golden West League match today

at David Baker.
