Vagenas, L.A. Galaxy capture championship

November 14, 2005

VagemasGLENDALE -- For the second time in four years, the New England Revolution couldn't stop Pete Vagenas and the Los Angeles Galaxy in their quest to win a Major League Soccer championship.

Los Angeles -- which features Vagenas, a St. Francis High graduate -- defeated New England, 1-0, in overtime on Sunday at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas to capture its second championship.

The Galaxy beat the Revolution, 1-0, in 2002 to win its first title.

Guillermo Ramirez scored from the top of the penalty box in stoppage time of the first overtime for the match's lone score.

Los Angeles, which went 13-13-7 in the regular season, had the fewest wins of any MLS champion. It was also the lowest-seeded winner at No. 8.

Vagenas, Los Angeles' captain, played in 29 matches this season, tallying a career-high five goals.
