Making Fitness Fun

December 16, 2005|By Mary O'Keefe

Children at Holy Redeemer Catholic School jumped, stretched and giggled their way through "T-Bone's Fitness Mania" assembly on Tuesday. They had so much fun they didn't even realize it was exercise, which is just the way Tim "T-Bone" Arem likes it.

Arem travels to more than 100 schools every year promoting physical fitness and making good food choices.

"My goal is just to get them moving and making healthy choices," Arem said.

He added that he noticed a need to promote a healthier life style for children because of increasing childhood obesity.

For 50 minutes he had studentsrunning in place and juggling. At one point he had a child step into a pink, stretchy sack, pulling the material over his head and slowing moving around. He then had another child join him, explaining teamwork and cooperation as the two boys learned to move as one.

The students also learned about the food pyramid and how to eat healthy. One boy who looked at the pyramid asked, "Where's the sugar?"

Sometimes change is difficult.
