Sixth-graders stepping up

Bravo! Audiences are still talking about Thursday's Winter play, which featured a variety of small group performances by students. Families of fifth-graders in the school's area should watch for applications in the mail on the fantastic sixth-grade program!

Cerritos Elementary

The next School Site Council/Parent meeting is Thursday at 3 p.m. Teacher demonstrations will show parents how to help their student improve reading comprehension! A second Fine Arts Day is Jan. 31 where students in grades 1 through 6 will enjoy visual and performing arts education.

Verdugo Woodlands Elementary

Can't wait until Glendale High's Big Saturday in February? Grab grub at the Verdugo Woodlands PTA Pancake Breakfast this Saturday! Located at the Dad's Club Youth House, 1728 Cañada Blvd., the breakfast runs from 7 a.m. to noon; tickets will be sold at the door and it's open to the community (pre-sold tickets were available at Sport Chalet and Virgil's earlier this month).

This is Yellow Ribbon Week and the theme is "Hands and Words are not for Hurting." Parents of students in private schools considering a public school transition can contact the office at 241-2433 for a tour of Verdugo Woodlands, 1751 N. Verdugo Road.

Horace Mann Elementary

There's a reason to brush and floss daily. Thursday is spring picture time for students on the Track A schedule. Track C students pose on Feb. 2 and Track D students get their turn Feb. 9. Track B students have photos snapped March 2. Administrative secretary Adrienne Van Houten says "Get your smiles on!"

John Marshall Elementary

Principal Katherine Hurley states, "It's an exciting time to be at John Marshall Elementary!"

This school year will find new activities and events, including learning opportunities for parents. Parenting classes offered include test preparation and parenting skills. Call (818) 242-6834 for information, dates and times.

Hurley also reports that her school has started its first yearbook to capture special moments of student life for viewing in one, great book of memories. Details for pre-sale orders are coming. The first Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) Program Parent Meeting is set for Feb. 2 at 6 p.m. in Room 5.
