Mountain Avenue Student Writes Winning Essay

January 27, 2006|By Mary O'Keefe

Sarah Oh, a fifth grader at Mountain Avenue Elementary, won a $300 scholarship for the essay she submitted for a contest sponsored by the Korean American Foundation

Oh titled her work "I am Proud to be Korean-American."

In her essay, Oh wrote about how proud she is to be part of the Korean and American cultures. She said she has an advantage over other students because she can enjoy playing games like American Monopoly as well as the Korean game of chance Yut-Nori. She also enjoys both Korean and American music and celebrates holidays that are from the two cultures.

She also included that she felt it important to speak, read, understand and write Korean and English. She speaks Korean to honor her heritage and English to do well in school.

Oh read her essay to her fellow students during Mountain Avenue's flag ceremony.

"She is the only winner of the essay," explained her mother, Helen.

Oh officially received the award at an earlier banquet, where she posed for a picture with Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

Oh and her family donated the scholarship money to Mountain Avenue's library. Her parents matched the funds to add to Oh's savings for college.

"We wanted to show our appreciation to Sarah's teacher," said Oh's father Samuel.
