KIESAU ON THE MOVE

Former Glendale High and Glendale Community College standout quarterback Eric Kiesau was named wide receivers coach at the University of Colorado on Jan. 19. Kiesau held the same position at the University of California from 2002-05, when he coached All-Americans like Geoff McArthur along with Jonathan Markonnen, LaShaun Ward, Robert Jordan and DeSean Jackson.

California, which was near the bottom of the Pacific-10 Conference shortly before Kiesau arrived, finished 33-17 in his four seasons. It emerged as one of the conference's top teams under Kiesau, who has coached in three bowl games.

The 33-year-old Kiesau, who graduated from Portland State University, helped Glendale High to a Pacific League championship and a 10-1 record in 1990. It marked the first undefeated regular season for the Nitros since 1962.

At Glendale College, Kiesau led the Vaqueros to an 8-2 record and a trip to the 1992 K-Swiss Classic Bowl.

GCC suffered a 24-23 defeat to Antelope Valley College, but Kiesau earned a spot on the Junior College Gridwire All-American Team.

He also served as receivers and running back coach at Utah State University from 2000-01, when he coached All-Americans Kevin Curtis and Emmett White.

Kiesau will work under new Coach Dan Hawkins, who is the winningest active coach in NCAA Division I-A football.

TRIO TO RECEIVE HONORS

La Cañada High School will continue its annual tradition and induct three members into its Athletic Hall of Fame during halftime of today's La Cañada-Monrovia boys' Rio Hondo League basketball contest. The game will begin at 7 p.m.

Bernstein starred as a goalkeeper on the school's boys' water polo squad for three seasons. He guided the Spartans to a CIF Southern Section Division championship in 1997 and graduated in 1998. He then competed on the University of California men's squad for four seasons.

Arase, who graduated in 1999, played soccer and softball for the Spartans. She stood out in goal on the girls' soccer team, culminating in being named the Rio Hondo League's Most Valuable Player in 1999. Arase also earned All-CIF honors before moving on to USC and the University of Portland, where she helped it win an NCAA championship.
