The Bureau of Labor Statistics must modernize its surveys so that the 21st-century economy is reflected in 21st-century statistics, he said, adding that small business owners, consultants and independent contractors play a much integral role in job creation and economic growth than they did before World War II.

Antonovich calls for higher jail security

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a motion made by Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich Tuesday that called on the Sheriff's Department to house high-security inmates in appropriate facilities and improve staffing levels to prevent further violence in county jails.

Antonovich's motion directed the county's chief administrative officer to work with the sheriff to place high-security inmates in the state-of-the-art Twin Towers facility that currently houses women; implement a new recruiting bonus system to provide monetary incentives for staff who refer qualified candidates to the department who complete the Sheriff's Academy; replace sworn staff with civilian staff in tasks that need not be performed by deputies; and make recommendations to use deputies more effectively.

Antonovich compared housing dangerous high-security gang members with rival gangs and non-gang inmates to giving matches to a child.

It will take 20 to 50 years to fill the 1,100 deputy vacancies at the current rate of hiring, Antonovich said.
