Locals ready for CIF foes

playoff previewsNine area teams, five in boys' basketball, set for Southern Section playoffs.GLENDALE -- The following is a preview of today's CIF Southern Section playoff games involving area teams:

BOYS' BASKETBALL

Valencia at Glendale, 7:30 p.m.: Glendale (12-14) faces Valencia (20-6), the No. 10 seed, in a Division IAA first-round game.

The Nitros will rely on their guard play to defeat the Vikings, who are the second-place team from the Foothill League.

The Vikings won six in a row before losing its last two games to end league play. Senior forward Teddy Goetz leads Valencia, averaging 16 points and 8.3 rebounds per game.

Hoover at Glendora, 7:30 p.m.: Hoover (19-7) plays seventh-seeded Glendora (20-8), which finished second in the Sierra League, in a Division IA first-round game.

The Tornadoes, who finished tied for second in the Pacific League, will make their first playoff appearance in Coach Vigen Jilizian's three-year tenure.

Kyle Gordien (13.7), Matthew Le Duc (12.8) and Dominic Tiger-cortes (11.4) each average in double figures in scoring for Glendora, winners of its past five games and seven of its last eight.

Ridgecrest Burroughs at La Cañada, 7:30 p.m.: La Canada (22-4) garnered the third seed in Division IIIAA and plays Ridgecrest Burroughs (14-12) in a first-round game.

The last time the Spartans met Burroughs in the playoffs, the Burros upset La Cañada in the first round in 2002.

Burroughs, which has lost two of its past three games, is paced by Robert Willhite, who averages 19.1 points per game. The junior guard also pulls down 8.9 rebounds per contest.

Teammate Evan Cubit scores 13.9 points per game and Chauncey Barnett chips in 12.5.

Murrieta Calvary Chapel at Flintridge Prep, 7:30 p.m.: Flintridge Prep (10-13), which shared the Prep League championship with Pasadena Poly but lost the coin flip to determine the top entry, takes on Murrieta Calvary Chapel (12-10) in a Division IVA first-round contest.

The Warriors' Cody Young has a 16.5-point-per-game average. Young, a 6-foot-6 forward, also averages 10.5 rebounds per game.

Marywood Palm Valley at Renaissance Academy, 7:30 p.m.: Renaissance Academy (20-4), which advanced to the Division VA championship game a year ago, earned the second seed in the division and a first-round bye.

The Wildcats, the American League champions, play Palm Valley, which defeated Big Pine, 53-49, to advance.
