Abando, who works for All City Management Services ? a company contracted by the city to provide crossing guard services ? had been assigned to Glenoaks Elementary School for nearly two years and was well-liked by students, Glenoaks Elementary Principal Bob Modrzejewski said.
"He's very friendly, quiet, but was always willing to help the kids and was very conscious of their safety," said Modrzejewski, who spent Thursday morning explaining to students what had happened.
"The kids knew him and they really liked him," he said.
Police blocked Glenoaks Boulevard in front of the school for nearly two hours Thursday while they investigated the accident.
A replacement crossing guard was brought in by mid-school day.
This is the second crossing guard hit in the Southland in two days.
On Wednesday, a crossing guard in Norwalk was struck by a hit and run driver, who is still at large.
