Student selected for $1,000 scholarship The California Cooperative Education and Internship Assn. awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Glendale Community College student Shirley Mims.

Two Bernard L. Hyink Scholarships are awarded ? one recipient is selected from a four-year college or university and one from a two-year school, based on the students' essays.

The winners will be honored at a conference at UC Riverside on March 23.

Mims is a physical science major who worked in accounting jobs for several years.

She came to the college as an adult re-entry student taking accounting classes and personal-interest courses, but rediscovered her love of science after taking professor Rick Guglielmino's physics class.
