GLENDALE ? Nearing the season's midway point, several local high school track and field stars are set to compete against their contemporaries from around the country.

More than 500 schools from 24 states are registered to participate today and Saturday in the 39th annual Arcadia Invitational at Arcadia High, including athletes from Crescenta Valley and St. Francis highs and possibly Glendale.

Steben, who will take part in the seeded competition at 10:45 a.m. Saturday despite battling a left groin injury, said the meet will serve as a barometer to measure how he might fare in upcoming meets.

"It's a good preview for trying to get to the state meet," said Steben, who registered a vault of 13 feet 10 inches in last year's rendition.

Crescenta Valley will have its share of boys' and girls' athletes ready for several running events.

The Falcons will have their 4 x 100-meter mile relay team of Michelle Callister, Claire Collison, Rachel Lange and Shelby Pock participate in the invitational race at 8:16 p.m. today. Nathan Sellers, Michael Sheridan, Zack Torres and Eric Kleinsasser will run in the boys' seeded 4 x 100 mile relay at 8:41 p.m.

Crescenta Valley's participation won't stop there. Lange and Pock will take part in the 1,600 open race at 11 a.m. Saturday and will then team with Claire Harrison and Collison in the open race of the distance medley event at 2:28 p.m. Saturday.

Harrison will run the 400 leg of the race with Collison handling the 800. Lange will anchor the 1,200 portion of the event with Pock completing the 1,600 leg.

Nathan Sellers, who took second in the Division I race at the State Cross-Country Championships, will run in the seeded 3,200 at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Glendale Coach Bob Bailey said the Nitros are the first alternate team that might partake in the 1,600 sprint medley invitational, which will be held at 7:28 p.m. today. If the Nitros receive the nod, then Rita Assoian, Heidi Diaz, Jennifer Dowty and Daniela Pollard would run the race.
