Antonovich initiates child care website

Political Landscape

April 14, 2006

The L.A. County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved Supervisor Michael Antonovich's motion on Tuesday directing the chief information officer and the director of public and social services to work with the state's Community Care Licensing Division to create a child care Internet information website.

The site would be designed to help parents and caregivers make informed choices about choosing child care programs.

The website, which will be based on a similar program in New Hampshire, would allow parents to search for registered Child Care Centers in their neighborhoods and view a summary of any licensing violations incurred by the center and any available corrective actions.

Nation experiences bumper job growth

Rep. David Dreier touted recent economic numbers.

Dreier, who is also chairman of the House Rules Committee, said 211,000 more jobs were created in the month of March, bringing the total number of new jobs created, since tax cuts were made in 2003, to 5 million.

Job growth had been strong in engineering and computer systems design, he said. Unemployment had also fallen to 4.7% during the same period.

The U.S. economy is in full expansion mode and consumer confidence is on the rise, said Dreier, who added that the government should continue its pro-growth agenda to ensure job creation kept pace with job demand.

Plea for positive assembly campaign

Anthony Portantino, Democratic candidate for the 44th Assembly District, has urged all candidates to sign a Positive Campaign pledge.

The pledge, adapted from a chapter of the League of Women Voters, requires candidates to keep the focus of their electioneering on the merits of their own campaign rather than denigrating their opponents.

Portantino has vowed to honor any candidate who agrees to join him in signing the pledge.
