Concert becomes eclectic

April 26, 2006|By Tracey Laity

LA CA—ADA FLINTRIDGE ? Flintridge Preparatory School students will swing into the new season with their annual spring concert tonight.

The audience is in for an eclectic night of music ? the school's orchestra will perform pieces by Haydn and Ravel, the jazz band will experiment with the music of John Coltrane and the Flintridge and Chamber singers will perform a selection of Renaissance madrigals.

Madrigals are popular texts that are set to music and each part is set to a different melody that is sung simultaneously, said Simone Fried, who has been a member of the school choir for the past three years.

"It really is a totally different style of singing and it's very challenging," Fried said.

She has no idea how the audience is going to react to the madrigals but she said the audience members, made up of faculty and families, have been very supportive of the choir.

"There's always a little bit of nervousness before you go on but these concerts are always very friendly and it's nice to know everyone else is standing there with you," Fried said. "We talk to each other out of the sides of our mouth even though we are not supposed to."

Fried, an advanced choir and dance student who took part in the recent school production of "Jesus Christ Superstar," said she couldn't quite believe school was coming to an end.

"It doesn't seem quite real, I'm so involved in school at the moment, it's hard to believe that we are leaving," said Fried, who added the majority of the 12 Chamber Singers are seniors who will be making one of their last musical performances this year.
