Glendale Quilt Guild Features Contemporary Quilt Artist

Velda Newman is an internationally recognized contemporary quilt artist, author and lecturer from Northern California, Known for her large scale, mostly organic designs, Velda creates original quilts of exceptional beauty and craftsmanship. For the past 18 years, Velda's work has appeared in many national and international exhibitions and has been featured in more than 30 publications, including Quilter's Newsletter and Threads magazine. She is the mother of four and the grandmother of 10.

Her lecture will be about inspiration and evolution. Through slides, she will show you how she started, how she now works, and she will also share a little bit about what she's learned and obstacles she has encountered throughout her 20 year creative journey. Her intention is to encourage by example. She hopes each attendee leaves the lecture inspired and feeling that if she can do it, so can you. She will bring as many of her quilts as she can and is open to questions.

There will be a two-day workshop taught by Velda Newman - Texture and Form 2, May 13 and 14 at the Glendale Central Library. Cost is $50 or $40 with voucher; $70 for non-members. Payment saves your place.

Nature is an endless source of beauty and inspiration. With this in mind, learn how to get rid of "flat" appliqué. Students will create texture and form, using machine techniques and alternative mediums such as paint, ink and colored pencil. Learn the pros and cons of lots of different mediums and their practical and not so practical applications.

Glendale Quilt Guild meetings are the second Wednesday of each month at Glendale Central Library, 222 E. Harvard, Glendale. The meetings are free to members. Nonmembers fee is $5. for information, call 882-9702 or visit www.glendalequiltguild.org.
