Glendale Police Plan Cops for Kids Golf Tournament

May 12, 2006

Cops for Kids, a non-profit organization comprised of Glendale police officers, will have its 15th annual golf tournament on Monday at the La Cañada Country Club.

The tournament is the organization's largest fund-raiser. Funds raised are used to buy shoes, clothing or food for those in need, Cops for Kids spokesperson Detective Espie Fernandez, said.

"Our goal is to help the underprivileged, but we would like to show everyone that the police are here for them as well," Fernandez said.

Throughout the year the organization hosts parties as a way to reach out to the children of the community.

"Each Easter we select a school and purchase Easter baskets for them," she said. "This Easter we went to Fremont Elementary School and did a presentation to let them know the police are here for them whenever they need us."

Fremont does not fall into the underprivileged school, however the organization feels it is important to reach everyone with their message of service, Fernandez said.

True to its word of being there for those who need help the organization often gives temporary housing for those in need.

"Sometimes we get officers that run into families that just need a place to stay," she added.

Cops for Kids is always looking for sponsors and donations. They are planning a Casino night for sometime in September to raise more funds to help more people.

Those who are interested in donating or would like to be part of the golf tournament can call Wendy Wogonarski at 246-9053. The golf tournament entry fee is $150 per person. Registration is between 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. The tournament begins at 8 a.m.
