Boost for National Guard border patrols
Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich has expressed strong support for President George Bush's plan to deploy National Guard troops to guard the border against illegal immigrants.
The National Guard already operates successfully at the border in its efforts to prevent drug trafficking and it can also help guard against illegal immigration, Supt. Antonovich said.
Legal immigration is a positive influence on American culture and the economy, he said, but illegal immigrants cost county taxpayers billions of dollars in public safety, health care and social services. Illegal immigration is an affront to people who follow the law and want to become legal citizens, he added.
Drier supports legislation for forests
The Forest Emergency Recovery and Research Act, which would allow for more coordinated recovery efforts after a major disaster on federal land, was approved in the House of Representatives 243 to 182 on Wednesday.
Rep. David Dreier, a Republican who represents La Cañada Flintridge and La Crescenta, voted for the legislation, saying it would be beneficial, especially in foothill forest areas where fires, floods and mudslides have caused serious damage in recent years.
The bill would protect forests in the foothills by helping the government to be better prepared for response on federal land, Dreier said.
The legislation has support from the National Federation of Federal Employees, the Society of American Foresters and the National Assn. of Counties.
Dreier also voted Thursday to fund wartime programs while continuing to cut the federal deficit, Dreier representatives said.
The Concurrent Resolution on the Budget for Fiscal Year 2007 was approved by a vote of 218 to 210.
Dreier said the budget is pro-growth, fiscally responsible and takes care of troops, veterans and the nation's most needy.
The fiscal year 2007 budget resolution essentially freezes non-security domestic discretionary spending by increasing it 0.1% over last year.
