No One to Blame for Lack of Fireworks

For 17 years the Crescenta Valley Chamber of Commerce Directors and members of the community have given their time on this holiday to bring a safe fireworks show to the public. It was a very time consuming event for many, but most rewarding when you saw the looks on the spectators’ faces.

We were fortunate to work with the best the last several years. The best of pyrotechnicians, the best of dedicated members, and the best of our community who attended. We worked with the fantastic Kemsley Carnival Company, and were fortunate to have the donated support from the California Highway Patrol, Los Angeles County Fire and Crescenta Valley Arson Watch.

But, we also understand the concern of the school district. It’s a brand new field and Crescenta Valley High School has waited years for this. However, to put on this show requires revenue, the revenue was the purchasing of tickets. The food, crafts and entertainment were not the source of our income, they were brought in for the enjoyment of the crowd.

No one is at blame here and hopefully next year we can come up with a solution. Thank you to all who have been a part of this event the last several years.

Mad About Extinction

I am an 11-year-old girl in sixth grade, and I am writing because I feel very strongly about a topic that has recently come up: extinction.

In the United States alone there have been more than over 90 extinctions, and most have happened in the last 20 years. It feels like humanity is sitting on a ticking time bomb that seems never to be deactivated.

I’m just a kid, but it’s my future that lies in the fate of the adults. I am extremely mad because when I grow up I won’t be able to see the Siberian tigers, the humpback whales, thousands of bird species in their natural habitat because the adults that were supposed to make everything better messed up once again. I won’t be able to see the rainforest, to see the ozone layer full, to look at the stars without smog messing up my view.

That’s why I think that our mayor should do something about it, whether it’s raising money or changing something I don’t care. If any other kids read this, they’ll know what I mean. This has got to stop — now!

I decided that it was finally time to write this letter because time’s ticking away, and you never know when they’ll burn the rest of the rainforest down — along with hundreds of thousands of near extinct creatures.

There’s also a new issue coming up because Japan is killing some humpback whales that don’t need to be killed and I just decided that this is enough.

I joined an environment group called Roots & Shoots started by Jane Goodall, and we’re very busy raising awareness and writing letters. Please join me and try and keep this from more animals going extinct and/or convincing our mayor to do a fundraiser.

Sincerely,

Shayna Howitt
