In a scene from the old west Crescenta Valley Sheriff's Station detectives and deputies followed the trail of horse thieves that went from Lake View Terrace to Bakersfield. Instead of riding horses through the desert they tracked these 21st Century horse wranglers by using modern technology and helicopters.
Around 4 p.m. on June 21 detectives from the CV Station, with the assistance from Kern County Sheriff's Department executed a search warrant in the 6800 block of Muller Road in the city of Bakersfield and another warrant in the 9800 block of Elmco Avenue in the City of Lamont. Investigators recovered a $10,000 Paint quarter horse, two saddles and a generator from the Muller address. They recovered seven chickens from the Elmco address. Earlier in the week investigators recovered a $60,000 Andelusian horse and a $10,000 horse trailer from the Elmco address.
The recovery of the property links Juan Carlos Morales, 19, of Bakersfield, and Beatriz Mendoza, 44, of Lamont, to a grand theft that occurred in Lake View Terrace on May 30. The livestock and property was stolen while the owner was gone. A caretaker would check on the animals, CV detective Richard Lutz said.
