All Health's Breaking Loose

Say Goodbye to Extra Pounds Forever

July 28, 2006|By Loa Blasucci

Is it hot enough for ya? This kind of heat means fitting in to summer shorts and swimsuits is a must. Some of us may have tried to lose a few pounds to squeeze into last summer's wardrobe, hence the summer diet.

Let me tell you about Kerri. My first job as a make-up artist was back in the 70's on The Donny and Marie Show. The show had been a huge success the previous season, and things in preproduction became hectic. I was by no means a secretary, but help was needed in the production office during the week before taping and I found myself sitting behind a desk as an assistant. In front of my desk was a long, open hallway. I had a front row seat watching everyone walk up and down this corridor. It was a visual lesson in body types and postures.

I became friends with Kerri, the executive secretary of the show's producer. She was a tall brunette, easy going, about 60 pounds overweight. Walking was difficult for her. Carrying the excess weight made her heavy-footed, and rather than walk, she seemed to trudge slowly down the hall. Kerri suffered from a poor self image. She had been heavy all of her life and seemed to feel as though she was supposed to be heavy, as if everyone expected it from her. She was a people pleaser, and her personal needs were dealt with last.

Soon, she developed a summer crush on a young man and decided it was time to get herself in shape. She was motivated to get his attention and within three months had made quite a physical transformation.

From my front-row seat observing the new, thin Kerri walk down the hall, it occurred to me that nothing about her movements had changed. She trudged along with a thud in every step, just as she did when she was heavy. Even though she was a much leaner person, her posture and gait had not changed at all. Walking looked just as difficult as it did when she was heavier.

She seemed to enjoy her "thin time," but it wasn't long before Kerri had gained back all the weight. The way she carried her body demonstrated her internal programming, how she felt about herself and her own personal worth. The lifestyle she felt she deserved was all clearly stated in the way she trudged down the hall. The image she had of herself was heavy, and even though she could discipline herself to a thinner size, she still viewed herself as heavy and unworthy of a beautiful figure. Her internal programming or "body image" had not changed.
