Glendale City Council Meeting Wrap-up

August 10, 2006

RADAR SIGNS

The council approved awarding a $118,000 contract to CSI Electrical Inc. for the installation of permanent radar-activated speed-display signs at 12 spots in the city.

WHAT IT MEANS

In a report submitted to the council, city staff members suggested the signs be installed at six spots along Chevy Chase Drive, four spots along Glenoaks Boulevard and two spots along Adams Street — to go in both direction on all three roadways.

But at Tuesday's meeting, council members brought up concerns about other streets, such as Highland Avenue and Cañada Boulevard.

Though the contract has been awarded, the council did direct city staff members to go back and assess other priority locations for the signs before cementing exactly where they will be placed.

Councilman Bob Yousefian recused himself because he lives in one of the areas in question.

K9 TRAINING

The council voted to enter into a license agreement with Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank for a K9 training event next month.

The Glendale Police Department's newly formed K9 unit — which consists of four German Shepherds — requires training on a regular basis.

WHAT IT MEANS

The city manager will execute the studio license agreement for the training event to be held at the studios Wednesday.

While there is some risk involved in that studio employees will likely be present near the training, the risk is minimal, according to city staff members.

CONDO PROJECT

The council approved a final map for a proposed two-unit condominium subdivision at 2755 Montrose Ave.

All conditions of the tentative map have been met and the city's director of planning and city engineer recommended approval of the final map.

WHAT IT MEANS

Approval of a tract map is the first step toward building on the property. The final tract map gives the applicant 36 months to file for design review and building permits with the city.

BUILDING REPAIR

The council approved a $100,000 contract with Frederick Towers Inc., to repair water damage at the Maple Park community building.

The building sustained heavy water damage last month after a water pipe inside a partition wall ruptured.

The offices and rooms on the building's first floor were filled with between 6 and 16 inches of water for several hours, damaging flooring, walls, frames, doors, furniture and equipment, city officials said.

WHAT IT MEANS

The construction company will move forward with repairs to the building, which include repairing and replacing damaged walls and framing, replacing doors, and installing new flooring and carpeting in the damaged areas, among other things.

SEISMIC UPGRADES

The council approved a $11.8-million contract with DJM Construction Co. Inc., for seismic upgrades of the city's Municipal Services Buildings.

The City Council also approved an $8.3-million loan from SunTrust Leasing Corp. for the upgrades.

WHAT IT MEANS

The city currently has $4.7 million in federal emergency funds that can be used for the upgrades, and it is working to get additional funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The $8.3-million loan will be used in the interim, or in the event that additional funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency are denied.
