Mommy Comic at The Ice House

Debi Gutierrez appears Aug. 17-19

August 11, 2006

Debi Gutierrez, the self-proclaimed "Mommy Comic," has wowed audiences at comedy clubs nationwide and has appeared at comedy festivals including Montreal's Just For Laughs and Aspen's U.S. Comedy Arts Festival. And this month, she is making her much-anticipated second appearance of the year at The Ice House Comedy Club from Aug. 17 to 19.

San Gabriel Valley resident Debi Gutierrez taught kindergarten and high school before changing careers to become a stand-up comedian. Her act is based on "The Mom Thing," giving a unique, contemporary spin on dealing with classic issues such as kids, a husband, and running a household. Debi has made peace between men and women across America with her energetic, no nonsense approach to parenting and marriage.

"Pointing out our differences and simultaneously poking fun at our views on marriage made it possible to break through some of the barriers that were keeping husbands and wives from really understanding each other. When we laugh at ourselves and each other in a playful way, we can loosen up a little and really see what's going on. In the end, everyone feels heard and walks away with a little insight into each other's life."

Gutierrez currently hosts KCET's "A Place of Our Own" which recently won a 2006 National Peabody Award. This public-service project, designed to provide parents and child-care providers with information about helping pre-kindergarteners develop social, emotional and cognitive skills, includes daily TV programs and web sites in Spanish and English and more than 200 bi-lingual outreach workshops. Debi's other television credits include a guest appearance on "The Rosie O'Donnell Show," Showtime's "The Latino Laugh Festival," host of "Galavision's Que Locos," Lifetime's "Girls' Night Out" and ABC's "Laughin' Out Loud."

Debi Gutierrez will headline five shows from Aug. 17 to 19. Last Comic Standing finalist Kristen Key will be a special guest at the 7 p.m. show on Sunday, Aug. 20.

There is a two-drink minimum and patrons must be at least 18. The Ice House is located at 24 N. Mentor Ave. in Pasadena. For more info or to make reservations, call (626) 577-1894 or visit www.icehousecomedy.com.
