CCY Dragons Swim Team Heats Up Competition at Jr. Olympics

The CCY Dragons turned up the heat when it counted and delivered an outstanding performance at the Southern California Long Course Junior Olympics at the Canyons Aquatic Center on Aug. 2-5.

Eighteen Dragon swimmers had times fast enough to qualify in either individual or relay events and many went on to the championship or consolation rounds, racking up points which placed them 13th overall among 47 participating teams.

The 18 swimmers representing CCY were Alex Park, Harrison Thai, Kyle Otazu, Joshua Lo, Edward Yi, Matthew Riek, Alexander Najarian, Chris Kang, Young Tae Seo, Tricia Dobson, Michelle Du, Ashley Kang, Rachel Ku, Raya Choi, Robin Yi, Ho Jean Yoon, Gabriel Perez and Jake Ksendov.

CCY sent only one relay team to the meet, but it was formidable, taking second place in the boys' 11-12 200 and 400 medley and 200 freestyle relays. Relay swimmers included Thai, Najarian, Yoon and Seo.

The boys also scored well in individual events, beginning with Seo who took first in the 50 breaststroke, 100 butterfly, second in the 100 breaststroke and fourth in the 100 freestyle.

Thai went home with a fourth in the 100 backstroke, fifth in the 50 breaststroke and sixth in the 100 backstroke. Yoon took fourth in the 50 breaststroke, fifth in the 100 breaststroke and seventh in the 200 individual medley and Najarian grabbed a fifth in the consolation round 50 butterfly and seventh in the 100 backstroke.

Lo swam for silver in the boys 10 and under 100 breaststroke, then took bronze in the 50 breaststroke and seventh in the 200 individual medley.

Otazu went home with a silver in the 50 breaststroke, bronze in the 200 individual medley, sixth in the 100 breaststroke and eighth in the 50 butterfly. Park finished in eighth in the boys' 15 and older 200 butterfly.

Ku was third in the girls' 11-12 100 breaststroke and fourth in the 200 individual medley while Robin Yi took third in the girls' 10 and under 200 individual medley, fifth in the 100 breaststroke and 50 butterfly and sixth in the 200 freestyle.

Dragon swimmer will take a short summer break and then return to the pool to get ready for the upcoming short course season which begins in September.
