*Denotes Western State Conference Southern Division match

NORTHEAST GLENDALE — The intrasquad scrimmage on the Glendale Community College soccer field appeared to go smoothly.

That turned out to be good news for veteran Glendale College men's soccer Coach Joe Agoston, who will have little time to put together a cohesive team that might be able to contend for its first Western State Conference Southern Division championship since 2000.

The Vaqueros, who went a disappointing 6-10-5 and 4-4-4 in the division last season, must look into their talent pool to find the right mix to challenge for a spot in the postseason. They have gone two years in a row without competing in the Southern California Regionals after appearing in it in 2002 and 2003.

Glendale College will find out immediately where its stands when the Vaqueros begin the season at 7 p.m. today with a nonconference home match against El Camino Community College.

"It looks promising for us because we'll have a little more depth in most positions and that will allow us to make adjustments," said Agoston, who will begin his 21st season at Glendale College. "There seems to be a good attitude and desire.
