Despite their record, a huge and spirited audience was on hand to watch its team face the lightning fast Dons' running and short pass offense.
Verdugo Hills got things going right away without even touching the ball as they elected to kick off instead of receive. This strategy worked perfectly for them as just four minutes into the contest, the Wolves' Carlos Anaya fumbled the ball deep in Verdugo Hills' territory.
The Dons took over and moments later, Seb Ensiso ran the ball in from eight yards out. The point after was missed, but the Dons led 6-0.
Verdugo Hills didn't run the ball on the ground much in the first quarter. But in the second quarter, the Dons used their deadly running and short game, and this hurt the Wolves for the rest of the first half. Peter Seller, a 6'2", 205 pound tailback caught two touchdown passes from quarterback Stephen Miller for 12 and eight yards, respectively. Verdugo Hills went into the locker room at halftime with a comfortable 20-0 lead.
After receiving the second half kickoff, the Dons didn't make much noise until there were four minutes left in the third quarter when James Luna scored the Dons' fourth TD of the evening from eight yards out to up their lead to 27-0.
The Dons' offense shut down for the rest of the evening and gave the Wolves opportunities to find holes in their offense. Finally, Van Nuys running back Cameron Nelson scored a TD on a 55-yard run from the outside line that woke up the quiet crowd as quickly as it had been silenced earlier in the game.
The point after was missed, but the Dons finished the third quarter leading 27-6. Verdugo Hill controlled the final period as the Wolves ran out of steam and saw their chances to score any additional points steadily fade away.
Verdugo Hills' next contest will be against an old rival, the Hollywood High Sheiks, and it will be played on the Dons' home field tomorrow (Friday) night at 7.
