CVHS Needs to Rethink Activities

A couple of recent incidents involving Crescenta Valley High activities has me thinking — and boy, am I getting a whopper of a headache. As life-long supporters of GUSD schools and CVHS alumni ourselves, my wife and I and our two high-school-age sons went to celebrate CV's Homecoming game at Moyse Field (too bad CV's team didn't show up, but that's another story). As we were walking away from the stadium and talking about the "game," we were stopped in our tracks by loud, aggressive yelling coming from somewhere near the stands. Since we were completely on the other side of the field at this time, and the yelling was as loud and clear as if the argument was close by, we couldn't help but stop to see what was happening.

The language spewing from one of the combatants was, to say the least, shocking. Even to my culture-weary ears, I was amazed that an adult (it was obvious the person doing the yelling was not a student) would use such aggressive and vulgar language — so loudly — in such a public place. Then one of my sons said with obvious embarrassment, "Uh oh, that's Coach Eb." As we found out in the newspaper the next day, CV's varsity coach had indeed been involved in some sort of argument with a disgruntled parent (a postal worker?) and actually resigned over the incident. Whether his resignation was warranted or not will likely be argued endlessly in these pages over the next several months.

Then, last weekend, both of our sons attended the Homecoming dance held at the Autry Museum. According to our boys, the so-called "freaking" dancing at the event was so suggestive and lewd that they both felt extremely uncomfortable in an environment that was highly charged with sexuality and perversion. I asked them if there was any adult or school supervision at the dance and they said that CV's principal was outside hanging with some of the kids during the dance, but otherwise the only adults in sight were Autry Museum staffers. I'm sure they were only there to prevent any significant damage to the museum. Too bad nobody was there to do the same for the kids.
