Cho, Salvo ready for new challenge

Golf: Pair of area golfers to compete in CIF-Women's championship today in Murrieta.

GLENDALE — They've performed in several high-profile United States Golf Assn. championships, so they are used to the pressure of making big shots.

Now, Crescenta Valley High junior Christine Cho and Sherman Oaks Notre Dame's Sarah Salvo, a Glendale resident, will attempt to prove they are among the elite when they compete in the CIF-Women's Southern California Golf Assn. Championship.

The event will begin around 8:30 a.m. today at The SCGA Golf Course in Murrieta. The top six finishers will move on to the CIF-State Championship, which will take place at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 14 at Red Hill Country Club in Rancho Cucamonga.

Cho and Salvo qualified for today's championship after they carded 77s on Thursday at the CIF Individual Final at Diamond Bar Golf Course.

Cho, who was selected the Pacific League's Most Valuable Player after guiding the Falcons to their first league championship since the program began in 2000, will play in her second consecutive CIF-WSCGA Championship. She finished 19th out of 110 participants at last year's event in the Inland Empire.

Cho, who battled a cold throughout most of last week, said a top-six effort isn't out of the question since she's played well of late.

"I'm really excited to be playing with some of the top golfers from around Southern California," said Cho, who has participated in several USGA and junior championships. "I have to keep working on my swing so I can hit the ball solid.

"I have to attack the course like it's any other course. It's not that different from the other course I've played this year."

Crescenta Valley Coach Ken Johnson said Cho's putting would be key.

"She's going to have to capitalize on her short game and putts," Johnson said. "That will help tremendously, along with working on her recovery shots.

"I think her chances are good. She can compete with them, but it's just a question of her being healthy."

Salvo helped Notre Dame capture its fifth consecutive Mission League championship in October. She has competed in two USGA championships.
