Bereaved Families Join in 10th Worldwide Candle Lighting

December 08, 2006

Joining hundreds of organized memorial services around the world, members of the Verdugo Hills chapter of The Compassionate Friends, a national self-help support organization for families grieving the death of a child, will light candles Sunday, Dec. 10 in an act of symbolic remembrance. This is the tenth annual Worldwide Candle Lighting.

The local event will be part of a special service held at 7 p.m. at Pasadena's Vina Vieja park, 3026 E. Orange Grove Ave., and will feature music, reading, poems, and the candle lighting.

Annually, tens of thousands of families light candles for one hour during the Worldwide Candle Lighting, held the second Sunday each December. Candles are first lit at 7 p.m. local time, just west of the International Date Line. As candles burn down in one time zone they are lighted in the next, creating a 24-hour wave of light as the observance continues around the world.
