Teachers to get tenure
A total of 36 staff members of the Glendale Unified School District on temporary contracts were surprised by district officials Wednesday when they were converted to probationary status Wednesday. The move means they will soon get permanent contracts. District officials invited 34 teachers, one teacher specialist and one counselor to the district office's board room where the unknowing staff members were handed the new contracts. After completing the 2006-07 school year, the teachers will be on permanent contracts at the beginning of the 2007-08 school year.
Elementary School helps break record
More than 600 Edison Elementary School students, parents and teachers read aloud a selection from E.B. White's "Charlotte's Web" as part of an international attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the most people reading aloud simultaneously in multiple locations. School librarian Mindy Lieberman led the children in reading the famous passage where Wilbur the pig meets Charlotte for the first timeMore than 540,000 people around the world participated in the event, including all 50 states and 28 other countries.
