SPORTS NOTEBOOK:New-look Pacific League set to tip off

With Burroughs and Burbank in the mix, locals prepare for a whole new Pacific League this week.

January 03, 2007|By From Staff Reports

GLENDALE — The following are odds and ends from the local sports scene:

NEW SCHEDULE

AMONG CHANGES

The new-look Pacific League, with the additions of Burbank High and Burroughs, has already taken shape this winter with an early start to the soccer season.

However, basketball tips off on Friday.

It begins a new schedule for the league in which games will take place on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. In the past, the games took place on Tuesdays and Fridays.

This Friday will see Hoover get quickly acquainted with Burroughs. On the boys' side, the Zareh Zagaryan-led Tornadoes are 11-1 and have a formidable Indians squad awaiting with a 7-2 mark. The girls' game features the 10-3 Indians against the 5-3 Tornadoes.

Cross-town rivals Glendale and Crescenta Valley also lock up on opening night.

Of course age-old showdowns with Pasadena, Muir and Arcadia still loom, as well. Pasadena and Muir shared the girls' league title last season, while the always dominant Pasadena boys reigned supreme once again.

REBELS SHARP

IN TOURNEY WIN

The Flintridge Prep girls' basketball team closed out 2006 in style Saturday after the Rebels posted a 64-37 victory against Granada Hills Kennedy in the championship game of the Canoga Park Tournament.

Normally, the Rebels (9-3) don't play during the last week of December, but Flintridge Prep Coach Kenny Fisher and his team wanted to change course.

"This is one of the first years where we've been involved during the Christmas break," said Fisher, who has piloted Flintridge Prep to five consecutive Prep League championships. "Normally, I give them that time off."

Junior guard Courtney Robinson paced the Rebels with a game-high 20 points to earn the tournament's most valuable player award. Senior center/forward Laurel Myers had a game-high 10 rebounds for the Rebels against Kennedy.

Myers and senior forward Christina Watson earned spots on the all-tournament team, as well.

The Rebels earned tournament victories against Canoga Park, Rio Mesa and Kennedy and lost to Hawthorne by two points.

Competing against teams such as Rio Mesa, Hawthorne and Kennedy might be the perfect tonic for the Rebels, who will begin league competition at 5 p.m. Friday with a road game against Mayfield.

"They wanted to play because they know that it keeps them going and they realized that they can play against top-level schools that are very athletic," Fisher said.
