Filing Opens for Election

January 05, 2007

Filing opens this week for the Glendale municipal election taking place on April 3 to fill two seats on the City Council. Up for election are the seats currently held by Mayor Dave Weaver and Councilman Rafi Manoukian.

If Weaver runs, he will face his second election in two years, since he won a two-year term in 2005 by finishing fourth in that contest.

Announced candidates so far are Montrose businessman John Drayman, who ran strongly in 2005, and school board member Greg Krikorian, who is bidding to be the fourth Armenian-American member on the council.

Others who have been mentioned as possible candidates are community activist Herbert Molano and Chahe Keroghlian, another from the field of 19 in 2005.

If Weaver tosses his hat into the ring again, he is likely to be targeted by critics unhappy with his performance in office. Barry Allen of the Vanguard organization, who has said he will not run, has accused Weaver of conflict of interest in relation to his work with private groups, including the Tournament of Roses.

The election will be consolidated with the school board and the Community College board of trustees. The top two finishers will be elected, with no runoff.

The city has budgeted $330,000 to cover the cost of this year's election. Filings will be accepted through Jan. 26.
