The La Cañada girls' basketball team only led by six points after the first quarter, but would not have a hard time beating Blair at home Wednesday night.

Led by the duo of Joy Lelo and Emily Ballard, the Spartans brushed aside the Blair Vikings 62-36.

The Vikings (9-6) came out with more intensity, jumping out to a 5-0 lead, however, it would be their only lead of the game.

From there on, the Spartans (8-7) defense stepped up and took the Vikings out of their game plan.

"We knew going into the game that they were a quick shooting team, so we tried to minimize their good shots," Spartans Coach Tamar Hill said.

Lelo and Ballard set the tone on offense, scoring 14 points apiece for the Spartans. Guard Lauren Tsou also scored 14 points on four three-pointers.

The Vikings cut the lead to as little as four points midway through the second quarter, but a 7-0 Spartans run increased the lead back up to 11 points and took whatever momentum the Vikings were building.

At halftime, the Spartans led 32-22, and in the third quarter, the game would get out of reach.

A 13-7 third quarter advantage gave the Spartans a comfortable 16-point lead.

The Vikings would score another seven points in the fourth quarter, totaling a modest 14 points in the second half, while the Spartans scored 30.

"We put ourselves in a good position to shoot good shots," Hill said.

"We knew what we had to do and we had to execute as much as we could," Lelo said.

The Spartans went on a 15-4 to end the game.
