Upset bid comes up short for Rebels

Soccer: Flintridge Prep girls go to overtime again, but come up short at Santa Monica, 1-0.

SANTA MONICA — For 98 minutes, the improbable seemed possible for the Flintridge Prep's girls' soccer team.

Yet, with one bounce of the ball, the Rebels' upset hopes were crushed, as host Santa Monica, the No. 3 seed, scored the game's only goal with two minutes remaining in overtime, ending Flintridge Prep's season with a 1-0 loss in Friday's CIF Southern Section Division III first-round playoff match.

"No coach could be prouder of any team," Flintridge Prep Coach Sean Beattie said. "We played [Santa Monica] as hard as I could've asked them to play."

Play hard the Rebels (12-10-3) did, as they gave the heavily favored Vikings (22-1-3), the Ocean League champions, a run for their money.

It cames just two days removed from the Rebels' 2-1 overtime win against Righetti in a wild-card match.

Fueled by a steady defensive backline and anchored by the superb play of senior goalie Ayana Sumiyasu, the Rebels, the Prep League's third-place finisher, were able to negate the Vikings' potent offensive attack.

Despite being outshot, 27-7, the Rebels continued to come up with big stops.

Nobody came up bigger than Sumiyasu, who finished with 16 saves in only her second full game back from a serious knee injury.

"Ayana had incredible saves in goal," Beattie said. "She kept us in the game and gave us a boost."

The one ball Sumiyasu, an All-CIF selection last year, couldn't get to proved to be a costly one.

Eighteen minutes into the 20-minute overtime session, Santa Monica's Daniela Da Costa deflected in a loose ball in the goalbox following a throw-in.

It was the first goal of the match that counted, but it wasn't the first ball to find the back of the net for the Vikings.

In the 59th minute, following a header off a long free kick, the ball was volleyed past Sumiyasu. As the Vikings celebrated the goal, the referee held up his hand, signaling an offsides call which negated the goal, much to the chagrin of the Santa Monica players and coaches.

With the scoring chances coming few and far between for the Rebels, the best opportunity came in the 18th minute. Flintridge Prep's Lauren Van Der Ahe had a shot from a few feet in front of the goal that soared to the upper-left corner, only to be tipped away at the last second.

But in the end, the Rebels fell just short of extending of a hard-fought season.

"You coach to watch your team get to this spot and play as hard as they can," Beattie said. "This team has miles and miles of heart, I couldn't be prouder."
