Meet the Candidates - Part 2

March 02, 2007

To better acquaint voters with the candidates in the April 3 Glendale City Council race, the Crescenta Valley Sun presented all candidates with six identical questions touching on issues pertinent to the foothill area specifically and the Glendale area generally. We will run all of the answers we receive prior to the election day. Today we spotlight two of the eight candidates and their responses.Greg Krikorian

What is your reaction to the view protection/privacy issues now being debated by the council?

As a Glendale homeowner and past board of the Northwest homeowner's association, I want to go on record in supporting the passing of a view protection ordinance by the city council.

For too long, the residents of Glendale have had to endure the overdevelopment of residential lots throughout the city. This overbuilding has had an adverse impact on not only the properties that abut these lots, but on the neighborhoods as a whole. The time has come for the city council to take a stand and protect the neighborhoods of Glendale by ensuring that any further development or additions to residential properties are done in such a way as to not adversely impact the neighborhoods they occupy. Property rights not only extend to individual property owners, but to those whose property is next to another's.

I feel that a group of stake-holders, homeowner associations, city staff and others should be formed to study this topic objectively. We should look at what other cities have done, from Burbank to Beverly Hills. This should look at impact not only on hillside homes, but also for all residential properties throughout the city. What will this issue look like ten years out, etc.

What steps would you take to deal with traffic congestion issues in the city of Glendale?

Our population has increased from 162,000 to 205,000 in the past 15 years. This increase in density has led to heavier traffic congestion, gridlock and concerns with both parking and the safety of pedestrians. Adding present and future construction projects, traffic congestion will continue to worsen. It is clear that creative solutions must be forthcoming. Having served on a variety of transportation committees in Glendale and other nearby cities I've gained valuable insight into the causes of and solutions to various traffic problems.
