Glendale City Council Meeting Wrap-up

WATER MAIN REPLACEMENT

The council unanimously approved the Burchett Street Water Main Replacement Project. The project consists of replacing about 9,700 feet — almost two miles — of deteriorated 4-inch, cast-iron water mains with new, 8-inch ductile-iron mains on multiple streets within the city.

WHAT IT MEANS

Replacement can now begin on the project at an estimated cost of about $1.4 million.

COURT REPLACEMENT

The City Council unanimously approved replacing Carr Park's basketball court.

The park's asphalt court was demolished in November as it was in a shoddy and unsafe condition.

WHAT IT MEANS

The replacement court will have new poles, rims and backboards and greater handicapped accessibility.

The cost of the project will be about $70,000, to come from different accounts within the city.

EVENT SPONSORSHIP

After hearing a short presentation, the council voted unanimously to sponsor the Glendale Educational Foundation's 2007 Student Showcase Extravaganza.

The extravaganza will take place on June 8 and feature performances and presentations from local elementary and high school students.

WHAT IT MEANS

The city agreed to film the show and make copies of the show on DVD, as well as possibly rebroadcasting the show on GTV 6.

RED LIGHT ENFORCEMENT

The council voted to initiate a trial program that would place cameras at certain city intersections in order to catch those who run red lights.

WHAT IT MEANS

This Red Light Photo Enforcement Pilot Program will be established at one or two busy intersections in the city.

It aims to reduce the number of collisions at intersections, according to a city staff report.
