Army invades park to perform a clean-up

Members of boot camp combine exercise with civic duty as they get physical with park.

Verdugo Park presented quite a sight on Saturday morning when a sweat-suited and tennis-shoed army banded together for a dual mission.

The objectives: clean up a patch of Glendale and get fit.

Organized by Glendale- and La Crescenta-based fitness program All About You Wellness Boot Camp, the event drew more than 40 participants, who turned up to pick up trash in the park while getting in a good workout.

"We're trying to just combine fitness and giving back to the community," said All About You Wellness co-founder and trainer Elaine Miller.

"Our boot camp is a lot about body, mind and spirit, healthy living and lifestyle. So we like to do these kind of events where it's not only about ourselves and doing something helpful for ourselves, but it's also about helping out the community."

In its second year, the clean-up day is conducted in partnership with Glendale Neighborhood Services and the Committee for a Clean and Beautiful Glendale.

Boot-campers wearing latex gloves split up into four teams and spread out over the park to snatch up refuse from the landscape, all while taking on an obstacle course of zig-zags, sprints, jumps, lunges and side steps.

"Our boot camp is a community already," said co-founder and trainer Narina Tatoussian. "But we thought it would be a great event to reach out to the community and get everyone together. This is one of our ways to give back."

The Wellness Boot Camp program, which offers exercise routines six days a week, provides participants with a completely different experience than going to a gym, said member Christine Hayrapetian, 24.

Complete with nutrition and wellness seminars and a wide variety of indoor and outdoor exercise routines, the program is a great motivator for anyone who wants to get in shape, she said.

"I was ready for a change in my life; I wanted to get fit," she said.

"And I tried on my own, but not only is this good for the mind, body and spirit - but the excises give you endurance and strength."
