Victories are citywide

Victors in the municipal election enjoy support across a wide swath of the city. The winning candidates attribute their showing to tapping into issues common to the entire city.

GLENDALE — The three first-place winners in last week's election claimed their seats by sweeping precincts in all areas of the city, demonstrating a broad spectrum of support.

In the City Council race, John Drayman won 30 of 50 city precincts and tied for the most votes in another precinct with Dave Weaver. Drayman's supporters came out from around the community to show their support. He dominated the northern half of the city, including his home area of the Crescenta Valley, and the eastern precincts. But he also managed to pull in votes from other areas of the city, including nabbing two of southernmost precincts.

Drayman attributes his success to strong campaigning, but more importantly, to a problem he said Glendale residents were complaining of across the city — one they hoped he could fix.

"Over the past eight years we've seen a number of areas in the city that are all being affected by exactly the same issue — how the council was interacting with them related to property rights issues, zoning issues and residential development issues," he said. "This was true of every neighborhood."

The council has not been responsive to residents' needs, he said.

After extensive outreach to the community on addressing this issue, Drayman said, supporters came out in his favor.

But it's not all about winning precincts. Incumbent Dave Weaver — who was elected to another four years on the council — only won four precincts outright and tied for a fifth. But in the total vote count, he was right on Drayman's heels in many precincts.

Weaver was the second-highest voter getter in 25 of 50 city precincts.

His highest numbers came from Dunsmore Park in La Crescenta and the First Congregational Church of Glendale, where he garnered 147 votes at each. In both instances, he was second only to Drayman.

The second-highest precinct leader — though not garnering enough votes to make it to council — was Chahe Keuroghelian, who led in 12 precincts.

Eleven of the 12 areas he won were in south Glendale. The 12th was in the west. In the northern part of the city, at precincts where Drayman and Weaver each cleared in excess of 100 votes, Keuroghelian garnered as few and nine votes.

With most of his votes coming in from south Glendale, Keuroghelian is looking to broaden his campaign during his anticipated run in 2009.
