College pay negotiations come to end

Teachers get a 7.5% salary boost and other workers ride along on the coattails of the increase.

GLENDALE — Contract negotiations between Glendale Community College's administration and faculty were finalized Thursday, resulting in a pay raise that will also increase the salaries of other college employees.

Under the new contract, Glendale College Guild members will get a 7.5% salary increase, which is retroactive to July 1, 2006. The faculty also gets its proportional share of rebates to health benefits accounts, among other benefits.

"It's been a very tough and long road, so I think everyone is feeling a certain level of relief that we've been able to settle," said Isabelle Saber, chief negotiator for the faculty guild.

But the contract still needs approval from the college's Board of Trustees and the more than 700 guild members before it becomes official, Saber said.

"I have received around 60 to 70 e-mails from our members and they were all very happy," Saber said. "If there are any discontented people, they have not voiced it to me yet."

The college's Board of Trustees President Armine Hacopian said she would vote in favor of the agreement.

"It took a long time for our negotiation team, working very hard, to come to an agreement and we're proud of their accomplishment," Hacopian said. "I think everyone's focus will be off negotiation, now that we've settled."

Trustee Tony Tartaglia said the end of negotiations is a positive sign.

"I'm very happy we've come to a settlement," Tartaglia said. "I think the faculty does a great job and I'm looking forward … to closure of these negotiations."

The end of the negotiations between the college and faculty guild also means an extra 0.2% pay raise for the college's management and classified employees — which include food services, clerical and custodial workers.

Trustees approved the contract settlements with the management and classified employees on March 19. Among various benefits, their settlements called for a 7.3% salary increase. But a "me-too clause" in their contract agreements allows for their salaries to be bumped up to reach parity with the faculty guild's pay raise.

"Well, 7.3 was huge and we were happy," said Saodat Aziskhanova, president of the college's California School Employees Assn. chapter, which represents the classified employees.
