GCC:Final weekend for musical

"Oklahoma!," the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical celebrating the American spirit, is in its final weekend at the Glendale Community College Auditorium Mainstage Theatre.

Kim Mowrey directs the classic musical romantic comedy. The choreography by Melissa Randel is based on the original choreography of Agnes de Mille. Musical direction is by Dan Belzer and Richard Berent. The musical features standards such as the rousing title song "Oklahoma!" "People Will Say We're in Love" and "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'."

Remaining performances of "Oklahoma!" are at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $15 general admission, $12 for students and seniors and $8 each for groups of 10 or more. Tickets may be reserved in advance by calling (818) 240-1000, ext. 5618.

SPRING IS THE TIME FOR MUSIC AND DANCE

As the end of GCC's academic year draws closer, there are several fine arts events scheduled for May and June.

The student art show opens May 17 in the college art gallery. The spring ceramics sale is set for June 9 from 1 to 5 p.m. in the Student Center. The May Peña, sponsored by the Assn. of Latin American Students, will be held May 12, featuring live music, dance, food and displays. Spring vocal performances begin with the GCC Invitational ChoirFest at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in the auditorium.

Admission is free to the event, which showcases choirs from local high schools as well as GCC vocalists. The Glendale College Community Orchestra performs at 4 p.m. May 20 in the auditorium. General admission is $7 and $5 for students and seniors. Conductor Theodore Stern will lead the orchestra through works by Falla, Mussorgsky, Hovhaness and Debussy. On the same day and time, Peter Green directs the Concert Singers through the group's spring performance at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 1020 N. Brand Blvd. General admission is $10 and $7 for students and seniors.

The Spring Choral Concert, featuring vocal groups directed by Jayne Campbell, will be held at 7:30 p.m. June 2 in the auditorium. Admission is $7 and $5 for students and seniors. On June 3, the GCC Jazz Band led by Craig Kupka will perform at 4 p.m. in the auditorium. Admission Is $7 and $5 for students and seniors.

Advanced music students perform in upcoming free recitals. The Applied Music Recital is at 7:30 p.m. June 1 in the auditorium.
