College volunteers given recognition

More than 200 people showed their support for recipients of the 19th annual Glendale Community College Alumni Awards by attending the event on May 3 at the Oakmont Country Club.

Those honored were college volunteers Paul Locker, Karen Sartoris and Margaret Hammond.

Locker received the Raymond D. Edwards Award of Merit for Career Achievement and Community Service. He is a past president of the Glendale College Foundation and has been a very active member of the foundation for 17 years. His efforts have resulted in more than $2 million in capital appreciation to the Endowment Fund since 2003. Locker is owner and president of Locker Reality Corp and Locker Reality Management.

Sartoris received the J. Walter Smith Award for Distinguished Service to the college. She came to Glendale Community College as a student in 1970. For the next 37 years, she contributed to the college as an athlete, sports fan and supporter of husband Jim Sartoris, longtime Men's Athletic director until his recent retirement.

Hammond was honored with the Patrons Club Presidential Award. Current vice-president and former past president of the Patrons Club, Hammond has been a volunteer for various Glendale organizations and charities for more than 50 years.

Glendale Community College ceramics professor Mark Poore made all three plates presented to the honorees.

Attending the banquet were Glendale residents and college supporters including recently retired superintendent/ president of Glendale Community College for many years John Davitt and wife, Gael, college trustee president Armine Hacopian, recently elected college trustee Tony Tartaglia, Director of communication, Marketing, and Foundation Ann Ransford, Dean of Student Affairs Paul Scholssmann, Student Activities Coordinator and Alumni President Tzoler Oukayan, recent Glendale Mayor Dave Weaver and wife, Linda, Nicholas Hacopian, Rick Barnes, Wanda Bistagne, William Gallagher, Dave Greenbaum, Ani Halabi, Harry Hull, Armen Janian, Barbara Jordan, Jill Lewis, Joe Puglia, Doris and Jack Quinn, Kathi Renman, Pauline Richardson, Olive and Richard Warner, Karen Wharton, Antonio Patti, Helen Manvelian, Lisa Sartoris and Nicholas Sartoris.

Glendale Community College students receiving scholarships at the banquet were Arieneh Tahmasian, Elizabeth Grigoryan, Carolina Yernazian, Vahe Gyulnazaryan and George Hernandez.
