However, even in a place as full of despair as Higuey prison, where some inmates were locked away for murder, the medical team's efforts were not met with indifference from prisoners.

"I checked the blood pressure of the inmates, and there was not one that didn't smile at me," said Wolflick, who was also part of the medical team.

During the trip, the teens spent much of their time with the children around Kilometer Six. One particular scene that stuck with the visitors was the Dominican children playing baseball with a worn out tennis ball and a stick. They were impressed not only by the children's resourcefulness, but also by the joy that accompanied such a stark minimalism.

It was scene that spoke volumes about the life of the people in Kilometer Six as a whole. Although they lacked the material wealth of people in the United States, the people had a richness of spirit that seemed uncommon to the teens.

The trip provided a wealth of experience for everyone to reflect on and a sense of compassion for the Dominican people that grows out of understanding and interaction. Crescenta Valley High School senior Catherine O'Neill said, "It was just great to dive into another culture and learn more about another place."
