Holy Redeemer Enjoys Olympics Day

School turns out for friendly competition in the sun.

In a frenzy of face paint and red t-shirts, the students of Holy Redeemer School in Montrose gathered on their small grassy field for a long-anticipated event: the sponge bob relay race.

"What you have to do, is get a sponge with water and pass it over your head," explained kindergarten participant Grace Brady. "Then the last person has to squeeze the water into a bucket."

The wet and wild relay, which pitted lower, middle and upper grades against each other in friendly competition, was just one of several events the school hosted last Friday for their annual Olympics Day.

Dressed up in various colors according to grade level, Holy Redeemer kids played tug-of-war, ran a baton relay and hopped across the finish line in a potato sack race.

One highlight of the day was principal Susan Fite emerging from her office with purple dyed hair.

"We were doing a fundraiser for Pennies for Patients and I told them 'If you raise a $2000 dollars I'll dye my hair for Olympics Day,'" Fite said. "Well they did it!"

The students raised over $3,500 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society during their recent change drive.

The Olympics Day event this year featured a world theme with each class representing a different country including Greece, Italy and Jamaica.

"The potato sack race was my favorite because I was in it," Grace said. "And I like the sponge bob, too."

Students finished competition at 2:30 p.m., soggy but smiling.
