Emergency Blood Drive for Local Student

Verdugo Woodlands fourth-grader diagnosed with leukemia; community responds with blood drive.

June 15, 2007

A blood drive in the name of Patrick Aghaian, a fourth grade student at Verdugo Woodlands Elementary School, is scheduled at Glendale Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, June 20 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Patrick was diagnosed with leukemia last week and started chemotherapy immediately at the UCLA Medical Center.

His mother is Juanita Shahijanian, a teacher specialist at Jefferson Elementary. Members all around the Glendale Unified School District staff are mobilizing to help.

Patrick will most likely need a bone marrow transplant. The Aghaian family has just been notified that none of its immediate members are matches for bone marrow donation for Patrick.

The family is still searching for a match and appreciates the community's willingness to spread the word to possible donors.

A simple blood test is required to test for blood marrow compatibility. The blood test takes 10 to 14 days to be processed. The lab looks for 10 elements in the blood to be a match.
