EDITOR:City comes off as very anti-business

Regarding the charming Divina Cucina Restaurant ("City will investigate roof sign," June 13), I've known this property since it was a drive-in dairy. I've lived in Glendale for 46 years. The property was pretty much an eyesore until the Divina Cucina owners bought the property and turned it into this lovely Italian restaurant, complete with a patio. It's been a neighborhood favorite ever since.

Their recent upgrade, which included a beautiful tile roof over the patio and incorporated their present sign, was a lovely improvement that has even enhanced the appearance of adjacent properties. I don't understand the thinking of the Design Review Board. The sign was, and still is, in the ground.

The enhancements did not put the sign "on" the roof. The sign's pole was incorporated perfectly within the recent patio enhancement and tile roof. Now, after being cleared by the Planning Department and renovation is complete, and the owners have spent almost a half a million dollars, the Planning Department considers the sign illegal? Oh my gosh!

Is there any common sense or practical thinking within these departments? Could they be any more anti-business? I dined at Divina Cucina last night and took another look at the sign pole and patio roof. The Planning Department did not error in approving the remodel plans and must not go back on their previous approval now that the project is complete. Let's be grateful for the owners' willingness to invest so much in Glendale and in such a delicious and stylish way.

As for the idea of relocating the Montrose library down the street to the Rockhaven property ("City is studying purchase of Rockhaven," June 13) this makes complete sense.

Rockhaven is a beautiful example of local architecture and part of our history. This would be a perfect way to see Rockhaven's character preserved in the most useful and practical way. The fire station next to the present library could then be remodeled and expanded as needed. Why build a new fire station when this would be a great solution for both needs?
